Provincial and Territorial Wastewater Monitoring Priorities Survey

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is conducting a survey to better understand public health priorities related to wastewater monitoring and its impact within a post-pandemic landscape.

A summary of the survey including major findings (jurisdictional identifiers removed) will be shared through the Canadian Public Health Laboratories Network (CPHLN) and Public Health Network (PHN) to inform the strategic direction of the National Wastewater Monitoring Program. Identifying personal information will only be shared within internal PHAC groups. The results of this survey may also be included in future publications by the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML). If you have any questions or concerns, please contact NMLWastewater.NMLWastewater@phac-aspc.gc.ca.

The survey should take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. We greatly appreciate your responses and continued collaboration to ensure a robust and comprehensive wastewater monitoring program.

Is your province or territory currently participating in wastewater monitoring for infectious disease monitoring/surveillance or research?
Please select the option(s) that best describes your current participation in wastewater monitoring for infectious disease monitoring/surveillance or research:
Does your province or territory use or integrate wastewater monitoring data with clinical, case, or epidemiological data to inform public health guidance or decision-making
Does your province or territory use or integrate wastewater monitoring data with clinical, case, or epidemiological data for public dissemination (e.g., through dashboards or public-facing reports)

Please select the relevant pathogens or targets for each of the sub-question (column) in the table below:

*NOTE: Data integration refers to any pathogens or targets where the province or territory incorporates wastewater data with clinical, case or epidemiological data for public health guidance, decision-making, or for public dissemination.

Please use the additional details column to provide any clarifications or additional information.

SARS-CoV-2
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
Non-pandemic influenza viruses
Pandemic influenza viruses (including HPAI)
Measles
Other respiratory pathogens
Norovirus
Other enteric pathogens (e.g. Salmonella, etc.)
Polioviruses
Non-polio enteroviruses (e.g., EV-D68, etc.)
Candida auris
Other fungal pathogens
Vector-borne pathogens (e.g. WNV, dengue, California serogroup (CSG) viruses etc.)
Hepatitis A virus
Sexually transmitted and blood-borne pathogens
Mycobacteria (e.g., Tuberculosis, etc.)
Antimicrobial resistance targets
Antimicrobial residue testing
Substances of public health concern (i.e., illicit drugs)
Other zoonotic pathogens, please describe
Other pathogens, please describe

How is wastewater monitoring data used within your province or territory to support public health surveillance for infectious diseases?

NOTE: If ‘Other’ is selected please describe any other uses/roles of wastewater monitoring data you have observed (e.g., specific to priorities within your province or territory).

What priorities should wastewater monitoring programs focus on in your province or territory?
What is the minimum level of population coverage you consider necessary in your jurisdiction to support reliable wastewater-based monitoring? Please provide an estimated percentage or indicate N/A if unsure.
Has your province or territory previously participated in wastewater monitoring for infectious disease monitoring/surveillance or research?
